Even though we’re known as ‘The Geekos’, we reckon when it comes to technical stuff, the crew at the Australian Communications & Media Authority are super smart! 1. Safety Advice

Ask for information and advice about the phone and the services that are available on it, so that you can ensure your children know how to use it safely

See the Gecko fact sheet - Mobile Phones & Kid’s Health. Gecko knows health and safety is important to parents. There is no scientific knowledge shows there is no evidence of harmful effects to the general population - including children - from RF exposure below internationally accepted standards. However, it is best to limit phone use and to use a hands-free device where possible. The Gecko phone, as a limited function phone, is less likely to be used to excess than many other phones. Gecko provides an accessory hands-free kit specifically designed for use by children.

2. Internet Access

Does the phone have access to the internet? If so, can you show me how to disable internet access?

The Gecko phone has no internet access. Children will not be subjected to questionable material from the internet when using the Gecko phone.

3. International and Premium Rate Services

Can you bar the phone from making calls to international and premium rate (190) numbers and from sending text messages to premium rate (19) numbers?

What can be done to stop receiving a reverse-billed premium rate service?

What safeguards do you have in place to limit the possibility of inadvertently signing up to a reverse-billed service?

Only parent-controlled numbers (22) can be dialled from a Gecko phone. If parents have not entered and allowed 190 or 19 numbers to be called form the Gecko phone there is no possibility of making these calls.

4. Chat Services

Can this phone access services where users can anonymously chat to each other?

What safety measures do you have in place for users of mobile chart services?

The Gecko phone does not allow chat services.

5. Access to Content Unsuitable for Children

Does the phone allow access to content that is unsuitable for children?

Is this content automatically blocked on this phone?

The Gecko phone does not have internet access, has no camera and does not allow text messaging. The phone does not provide access to content which is unsuitable for children.

6. Dealing with content unsuitable for children

How do I report receipt of content that is unsuitable for children?
(For example, content unsuitable for children is received on the phone even though access to this type of content has not been enabled by the mobile provider.)

The Gecko phone can only make calls to 22 numbers set by parents using the security of a parental controlled PIN number. Parents can also restrict the phone to only receiving calls from the same 22 numbers. The Gecko phone does not allow access to other phone data services.

7. Nuisance/Malicious Calls

What number can I call to report receiving abusive calls or messages?

Can I block calls form a particular person?

The Gecko phone can only make calls to 22 numbers set by parents using the security of a parental controlled PIN number. Parents can also restrict the phone to only receiving calls from the same 22 numbers.

8. Bluetooth enabled phones

Does the phone have Bluetooth facilities?

Can I disable Bluetooth or hide the phone from other users?

The Gecko phone doesn’t have Bluetooth facilities.

9. Costs & Charges

If I choose a fixed term contract, what is the total cost of the plan over the contract period?

Do you offer both pre-paid and post-paid plans? How do they compare?

What services do you offer to help manage spending on the phone?

Currently the Gecko phone only offers a $12 post-paid phone plan over 24 months. This equates to a minimum commitment (excluding the handset purchase cost) of $288 over the term of the contract. Twenty minutes of call time per month is included in the $19.95 a month tariff. Gecko is providing parents with web-based cost control features which enable parents to monitor and manage children’s call costs.

10. Protecting your mobile phone from loss

What precautions can I take to minimise the risk if my phone is lost or stolen?

A Gecko phone is unattractive for phone thieves. It will only make calls to the 22 numbers set by parents and can be disabled (locked) in the event of theft using the IMEI number. The phone comes standard with a back pack clip to ensure children can attach the phone to help prevent loss.

11. Unsolicited emails/text messages

Do you have a number to call to report spam or filters to help block it?

What do you do to prevent spam being sent over your network?

The Gecko phone doesn’t allow emails or text messages.
