Useful bits and pieces
about kids and mobile phones:
Using a Gecko phone
Being the owner of a Gecko is a big responsibility for your child
and apart from the practical benefits of always staying in touch, it
aims to teach kids about respect, individuality and community.
It’s important your child knows how to care for and use their Gecko
properly. A Gecko phone comes with its own kids’ and parents’
guides, and we recommend parents read their guide first, so you can
best help your child with theirs. Reading through the guide together
can help your child become confident using their Gecko—for example,
why not let them show you how they can answer and make a call?
Since Geckos need to be properly fed to work best, also be sure your
child knows how to regularly charge their Gecko’s battery, and
recognise when it’s
low. Depending on their age, you might also want to make sure an
adult is responsible for overseeing the charging process.
Gecko and money
We here at Gecko also think it’s important for kids to understand
about the financial responsibility of being a Gecko owner (and how
this impacts us, the bill-paying parents)! That’s why there’s a
money section included in the Gecko Kids’ guide. Gecko was created
by parents, (so we might be a bit biased!) but we think it’s a great
idea to take your child through this.
Mobile phone etiquette at school
Your child’s school may have a policy on using mobile phones. It’s
always best to check what that policy is and make sure your child
sticks to it.
If your school doesn’t yet have a mobile phone policy, you might
want to suggest one. Geckos are great for keeping family and friends
connected, but they’re not made for use during school hours. To have
a phone ringing during class is a distraction for everyone.
Here at Gecko we’ve seen a great policy, where phones are turned off
and checked in with the teacher before classes start. When classes
are finished, the Geckos are picked up by their owners again, who
are then free to use them.
It’s also a good idea to make sure your child’s Gecko has their name
on it (check out the name tag sticker included with your Gecko).
Your child should
always know how to turn their Gecko on and off too.
